Protein Industries Canada and Innovate UK are working together to support innovation in the food industry. The organisations are offering $20 million CDN for collaborative research and development projects aimed at diversifying the protein world with plant-based alternatives.
There is a growing demand for plant-based food as the global food industry struggles to meet a growing food demand. Plant-based foods require lower initial energy inputs than raising livestock as well as a lower growth footprint. Projects that make scalable plant-based proteins a reality will go a long way to creating a healthier and more sustainable approach to feeding the world.
CEO of Protein Industries Canada Bill Greuel says they’re looking for specific projects.
“Many companies around the world don’t know how to use Canadian ingredients because they’re unique – either from a functionality perspective or from the taste and texture they provide. This collaborative information could look at a project where we’ve got a plant-based food company in the U.K. that’s looking for new and novel ingredients from Canada.” Greuel explained.
Companies from both Canada and the U.K. can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to both groups. These EOIs will be accepted until November 1st and projects must be completed by March 31st, 2026.
The call is part of an ongoing collaboration between the two organisations. Innovate UK will bring a delegation of companies to Canada the week of Sept. 11, 2023, while Protein Industries Canada in partnership with NRC-IRAP will host a mission back to the UK the week of Sept. 25, 2023.
