The Welsh Government has signed a new partnership agreement with Innovate UK, further supporting innovation and R&D in the country in a bid to help grow the Welsh economy.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Welsh Minister for the Economy and the CEO of Innovate UK, representing the first MoU agreed with a devolved government. The signing took place at an event attended by business leaders from the region, at AMRC Cymru in Broughton, North Wales, which is part of the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) industry-focused R&D innovation cluster.

This Memorandum highlights three key focus areas which should serve to stimulate and foster innovation:

  1. Connecting Support
  2. Stimulating Innovation
  3. Data

Through these three themes, the agreement seeks to ensure stakeholders in Wales have clear and effective routes to innovation support schemes by making the Welsh Government a partner to Innovate UK’s business support service ‘EDGE’. This will also allow the two organisations to collaborate on the design of future innovation programmes. This will require sharing and amplifying communication channels and building access to shared data to achieve common goals, address inequalities, and better meet audience needs.
